The Weekend

Hi y'all.  J.T. & I took the kids to Seattle this weekend to visit his sister & her two boys.  The kids had a lot of fun hanging with their cousins in addition to taking in some of the sites.  We checked out the Woodland Zoo.  Wow!  Zoos always bring about mixed feelings, animals in cages and all but the Woodland Zoo is very nicely done.  Growing up I frequently visited the Stanley Park Zoo here in Vancouver (which closed in 1994).  I recall lots of concrete with peeling paint, yellow polar bears and constantly molting penguins.  I have to say, the animals at Woodland appeared very healthy and well looked after...here are a few highlights:

and then a real highlight for me was visiting the store, Anthropologie, without my kids!!!  Shopping with an almost 3 year old and almost 5 year old is called insanity!  I showed such restraint and didn't buy a single thing but touched every item of clothing (the prints and textures of the fabrics were soooo wonderful) and took mental pictures of all the items for the home - wonderful table linens with pom-pom fringe and a fabulous vintage-like candelabra with birds and flowers on it!  I've been busy culling my stuff around here and am not quite ready to bring anything new into my abode just yet.

Now Monday and I see blue sky!!!  I'm going to start filling my planters and getting the kid's vegetable plot ready.  In addition to Spring & nice weather to get me going there's a new group on Flickr which is motivating me to get outside and garden:  The Unpretentious Garden.

I like these drawings...

I came across these great illustrations...

These ones are from "The Ground Meat Cookbook" (I know, sounds yummy, NOT) which was published by the Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago in 1955 and was illustrated by Selma Quateman:

and these from "Good Housekeeping's Book Of Ice Creams & Cool Drinks" from 1958 with drawings by Lois Axeman:

I'd like to write more but the couch, my knitting and Ewan McGregor's, "Long Way Round" are all calling to me...but hey, I recently was able to cross something off my list!  Pictures to come but the room is still in need of a few finishing touches.

Stockings

We will be away this Christmas so I am not doing much decorating.  Some red candles and sprigs of holly.  It feels strange to not have my special Christmas treasures around (though with my two little elves running amok they are much safer in their box in the attic).  However there are two things that I had to pull out...stockings!!!  I made my kids each a stocking for their first Christmas.  For Cam's I was inspired by the stocking that I used as a child.  It belonged to either my mom or one of her brothers.  For ZoĆ«'s I drew inspiration from Hable Construction...oh I love their stuff!

Saw this in the recent Dwell magazine Holiday Gift Guide.  It's available from Netto Collection.  So cute!
